Local Motor Vehicle Registration Fees

Local counties and municipalities are authorized by many states to levy local motor vehicle registration fees, which are typically collected by the state and returned to the locality. Most local registration fees are used for general revenue or directed towards transportation purposes, often for pay-as-you-go routine maintenance or operations. Some specific programs are funded through local registration fees. For example, in Clark, Churchill, and White Pine Counties, Nevada, a voter-approved Supplemental Governmental Services Tax is included among motor vehicle registration fees to help fund road construction.
